We are said to be justified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus; that is, our justification, as well as every other part of our salvation, originates in the free, unmerited grace and favour of God; but, nevertheless, it is through the medium of that redemption which is in Christ Jesus. Through his obedience, we are made righteous; and through his atonement, justified from transgression. The apostle says, that the righteousness which justifies, is of faith. If righteousness come by our own obedience to the law, justification would be of works, and Christ is dead in vain; but it is of faith, which is the sovereign gift of God.
