What then is the original of all his goodness to poor sinful man, to purchase such a worthless creature at such an invaluable price as the blood of the Son of God? Nothing but love, free undeserved love, love that loved before it was sought, that loved when it was rejected: “The Lord did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; but because the Lord loved you:” he loved you, because he loved you. As Almighty God could not define himself by any thing but himself, “I am that I am,” so he can resolve his love into no other motive than his love; he loved you because he loved you: and here is the spring, the fountain of this strange and unheard-of goodness of God in Christ; nothing but the free love of God.
