In the volume of the gospel it is written of Christ as the only saviour: here he is held forth, as prophet, priest and king; friend and redeemer, Lord and saviour, head and foundation of his church. The gospel declares him to be the way, the truth, and the life;—that by him all that believe are justified;—that there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. The gospel is called, by way of eminence, The gospel of salvation. It brings the news, the glad, the glorious tidings, the joyful sound of salvation. It proclaims, as on the house top, or on hills and mountains, the obedience, atonement, and righteousness of our Lord Jesus Christ. It sets him forth, as mighty to save; as the ark of safety, the rock of rest, and the city of refuge.
