The work which Christ performed for our salvation, though executed in time, was designed from eternity. The redemption of man proceeded not from a hasty resolution, formed without forethought, and taken on the spur of the occasion. It was the effect of divine deliberation; was digested in the eternal mind, and is the result of the mysterious counsel of the Trinity. The eternal Father looked down from his throne, and, when he beheld, pitied our fallen race. While justice bade smite, mercy cried, spare the guilty. Grace anticipated our necessity, and ere we had become miserable, determined to provide for our deliverance.
