By the Righteousness of God, as here distinguished from the Righteousness of Man, is not meant the just and equitable Dealings of God with Man; but a Righteousness that has been performed by God, in Contradistinction to any Righteousness that can be wrought by Man. And is, by the Apostle, plainly designed to express the active and passive Obedience of Christ. His passive Obedience, in paying the Penalty due to the Violation of the Law, by his Death on the Cross; his active Obedience, by performing that perfect Righteousness which the Law demanded, in a Life of unspotted Purity and Holiness.
