The Lamb of God alone bears away the sin of the world. In Christ, God has secured Himself a Victim for the sacrifice. “Christ our passover is sacrificed for us.” It is because He suffers as a sacrifice and expiation, and for that reason alone, that His blood calls down upon our humanity mercy and not judgment. It is this that lies at the basis of our text and makes it an everlasting verity, so that, to the vision of faith, Christ may appear to-day, and may appear through all time, to those who have need of Him, as “making peace through the blood of His Cross.” The Cross of Christ is thus the guarantee of the highest blessing which man can wish or God bestow.
James Aitchison — James Aitchison, The Cross of Christ as Set Forth in the Apostolic Writings (Falkirk: John Callander, 1896), discourse III, "Peace Through the Blood" (Col. i. 20), p. 60
