The preaching of the law is of use to convince hardened, secure sinners; to rouse their fear, and to hasten their flight to a glorious Christ, that they may be justified by faith in him: And it is of use to the faithful, as being a perfect rule to direct them in the way of holiness. But, it is the gospel of God’s grace that gives wings to their endeavours after new obedience. This is as oil to their chariot wheels; This joy of the Lord is their strength. It is observable that these doctrines are designed to excite those that believe in God, to the practice of piety. And it is certain all the doctrines of God’s grace, and the sweetest declarations of them in the world, have no efficacy on sinners that do not believe and regard them.
