Such a blessed alteration as this was made in the state of some of the Corinthians, who had been abandoned to the most flagitious practices; acquitted from guilt, delivered from condemnation, made righteous, restored to favour and entitled to life. And wherefore was it so? Why, as in the text, it was in the name of the Lord Jesus, or for his sake, in virtue of his atonement by the blood of the cross, by which he made peace, put away sin, and brought in an everlasting righteousness. The righteousness of Christ is every way adequate to the demands of the law and justice of God. Faith lays hold of this righteousness and it is imputed to the guilty sinner for the justification of life. This is the language of the gospel.
