How gloriously is the subject-matter of all apostolic testimony brought before this gentile auditory in these opening words of Peter’s discourse, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: ‘He is Lord of all!’ His message of peace to the world in rebellion, and exposed to wrath, is the fruit of His sceptre who is ‘appointed to be the judge of quick and dead.’ All is here prerogative as high in sovereignty as it is rich in blessing, and fearful in penalties. The great amnesty which Christ preaches is ‘the remission of sins’ to them that believe in His name: these, by this act of self-surrender and affiance, make trial of his mercy and might.
