The covenant, respecting our salvation, was not made with us, but with the Lord Jesus Christ, as mediator. As in Psal. lxxxix. 3, 4. I have made a covenant with my chosen; I have sworn unto David my servant; thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. That is, on his fulfilling the conditions of our salvation; which none but Christ was able to perform: which lay, in a perfect obedience to all the requirements of the divine law, in our stead; in making full satisfaction to divine justice, for all our offences; and, in his pleading the infinite efficacy of his own righteousness and blood, before the throne above on our behalf. These were the conditions of our salvation; and these, the Lord Jesus Christ, as the sinner’s surety, has actually fulfilled.
