In the old covenant of works, Do this, and live; obey, without sin, and obtain life. In the new covenant of free grace, Believe, and be saved: “He that believeth shall be saved.” He that worketh not (for salvation) but believeth on him (Christ) who justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Faith receiveth all salvation, freely, as God’s gift of love. This is a mystery which God alone can teach the soul to know experimentally. Reason, unbelief, and unbelievers think this faith dangerous, presumptuous; and plead, It is good to doubt, to fear, and not rest or trust too confidently on what Christ hath done, or what God hath promised. This is fighting against God.
