Forgiveness is not justification, nor is justification forgiveness, before God’s bar; and yet whom He forgives He justifies, and whom He justifies is most assuredly forgiven. Forgiveness is remission of the penalty for sin, in view of Christ’s satisfaction to the law which the sinner has broken; justification is God’s act of imputing to the penitent and believing sinner the righteousness of Christ, thereby changing his relation to God and violated law, and always accompanies forgiveness. Adoption and Assurance also accompany the divine forgiveness.
