One Bird may as soon fly with the Wings of another, as our Souls mount up to Heaven by the Wings (if I may so phrase it) of another’s Faith: It is true Faith, and thy Faith in Christ, O Man, that must justify and cure thee: Thy Faith must be true, with the Faith of others, who believe in Christ as the Gospel requires, but remember it must be inherent in thy Soul. As we cannot see with another Man’s Eyes nor walk with his Legs, nor talk with his Tongue, but we must see with our own Eyes, walk upon our own Legs, and speak with our own Tongues: So we cannot be saved by another’s Faith, but by a Faith of our own, wrought in our Hearts by the Word and Holy Spirit.
Nathanael Wyles — Nathanael Wyles, As the Leper’s Faith Was a Means of His Cure, So All That Would Be Healed and Saved by Christ, Must Have a Faith of Their Own in Him, Consider’d and Prov’d, in a Sermon from Luke xvii. Part of the 19th Verse (Colchester: J. Pilborough, 1741), pp. 15–16
