Faith there must be, not to purchase, entitle, merit, or procure peace, but simply to let it in. Just as there must be the opening of the eye to let in the light already made. Faith is just the opening of that eye. But then it is not faith looking to itself, but faith looking to the Saviour that comforts us. It is not faith seen, but it is unseen, it may be unconscious faith seeing only, always, the Lord Himself—Him, His work, His great salvation. It is not seeing the Saviour and seeing our own faith too, not seeing the atonement and our own faith too. No; this is mingling the clay with the iron in the foundation of our peace. It is seeing the Saviour himself and alone—in all his single solitary glory—as if there was nought in the wide universe but himself.
