Jesus incarnate, the brother man, sympathising with our troubles, and entering into our joys: Jesus the teacher: Jesus the example: Jesus the comforter: Jesus the strong friend, who upholds us continually with His powerful arm, who preserves, and strengthens, and blesses us—is precious to our souls. But Jesus, crucified and dying, is a name more potent than all. Here we have, drawn and concentered into one act, all the beams of His infinite and unspeakable love. And accordingly, when the Church raises her most rapturous songs, it is to praise “the Lamb that was slain:” it is to ascribe all the honour, and the glory, and the might, and the greatness, and the majesty, and the dominion, unto Him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood.
