Mercy and justice cannot always meet in the human judge. The human judge may have to condemn his own son. But in God there is a union of all perfections. Only as He is seen in the face of Jesus Christ can He be rightly known; only in the sacrifice on the cross can the mercy and justice of God be seen in blessed union. In the cross, God shows Himself to be eminently a merciful Saviour; there He shows His hatred of sin; there, too, He shows how it may be forgiven. It is the glory of God that He can be just, and at the same time be the Justifier of the believer in Jesus. He can preserve the honor of His law, and yet extend pardon to the penitent. The harmony of these seemingly inconsistent attributes gives glory to the cross of Jesus.
