What a blessed thing it is that, while God’s law binds every conscience without respect to position or profession, the gospel proffers its mercy without respect to character! The impenitent sinner is just as truly bound to obey God as any church-member is; while his condition is the dreadful one of rebellion. But the gospel invites the sinner to mercy. Though he may have sinned long and grossly, he is called to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. To comply with the call and become a believer will not alter his duty to obey God; but it will remove the responsibility of sin; it will dispose the heart to obedience; it will secure eternal life.
