For civil government, as such, whatever be the form of it, is a divine ordinance. The mission of the Church is not to supplant, but to impregnate and pervade it with a religious character, and to render it subservient to the glory of God. Christ's kingdom is not of this world. It has no form of civil polity to fight for. But in so far as the kingdoms of this world are hostile to the Church of the living God, it is and must be opposed to them.
