Editorial notes about changes to this quote's text or presentation.
He meant that the cross is not just a symbol but the standard by which all human thinking is measured. In the death of Christ, God reveals what is true about Himself and about us, and every belief must ultimately bow to that reality.
The quote is reliably attributed to A. W. Tozer. It appears in *The Radical Cross*, a posthumous collection published in 2005 that brings together some of his earlier sermons and writings. The whole point of that book is to put the cross back at the center of Christian life, not as a symbol we wear or admire, but as the place where God speaks most clearly and most decisively.
When Tozer says that the cross "stands high above the opinions of men," I take him to mean that whatever people think, whatever ideas or cultural trends are in fashion, the cross stands over all of it. It does not shift with public opinion. It exposes what is shallow and false. And when he says that all opinions "must come at last for judgment," I think he is pointing to the way the cross reveals both God's holiness and our need. In the light of Christ crucified, every belief we hold has to be examined and brought into alignment with what God has shown there.
