For as a law does not derive its authority from the subordinate judges who interpret it or from the heralds who promulgate it, but from its author alone'as a will obtains its weight not from the notary to whom it is entrusted, but from the purpose of the testator; as a rule has the power of ruling from its own innate perfection, not from the artificer who uses it'so the Scripture which is the law of the supreme lawgiver, the will of our heavenly Father and the inflexible (aklines) rule of faith, cannot have authority even as to us from the church, but only from itself.
